This week I attended the 'Tower Barzaar' at The Engineshed, Lincoln University. This is something I have had a hand in organising. Lincoln was in need of a decent handmade and vintage fair, and this proved to be the ideal location. The first one started in January and was great, the second was on Saturday, but unfortunately footfall was down, mainly due to the weather I feel. The poor swans out on the Brayford were actually bashing through the iced up water to get to their safe haven on the steps! Here are some of the lovely stalls who attended:

I have also begun to make the half choke chain Martingale dog collars, after a special request, I decided to order extra chains to offer these permanently. Only two uploaded to the site so far, but for an idea this is how they look! They are suitable for dog's who are that little bit stronger but still want to look fashionable :)

Tartan Themes For Burns Night

Without thinking, this week I seem to have had a run of all things Tartan for my pet products and was just as well as it was burns night on Weds!

It all started with an order for one of my Tartan collar and lead sets. This lucky pup received a new present with his name attached - hopefully 'Ozzy' is now a happy pooch and has been showing it off in the Highlands.

Then I decided to put my new red tartan wool to use and added to my dog bandana collection, as with all of my dog bandanas this style is available in X-Small - Large or available for much larger poochs as a special request,

As I have begun to add coats to my pet clothing range I also decided to use this tartan for one. This particular style is available with the choice of 3 different linings:

Towelling - To dry your pet when he gets wet

My Dog coats have a velcro fasten across the front chest and under the belly. They are available from X-Small - X-Large. To ensure you have the correct fit please measure your dog from the base of the neck to the tail. Plus around their belly. Well it is nearly that time of year again, the only thing I have managed to make for it so far is a Christmassy dog bandana. I have also made some dog caps! I saw these at The Robinhood and Country Fair last month and they looked adorable. You would think the dog wouldn't like to wear them but apparently they're not fussed!

Halloween dog bandanas/neckerchiefs for handmade Monday

This week I have been busy preparing for the Robin Hood Game And Country Show which takes place at Newark Showground on the 15th-16th October. It is a fun event for all the family and will host lots of different entertainment from dog shows-in the fab all about dogs zone, Jousting to a medieval village. I really hope the weather is kind! Handmade Monday - saddle stitched leather dog collars

Well, as promised I am finally taking part in handmade Monday again as organised by Wendy from 1st Unique Gifts. Do pop by her blog and see her new awesome Stig and Spider door hangers

After ordering some leather (I went with a natural veg tan) I decided to start adapting my new found leather stitching to my pet accessories. I haven't got the correct skimming equipment yet to start on my bags, so at least with the collars I can use a paring knife and crack on with them. I decided not to dye them as I want them to look quite traditional, as I go on I will be using various dyes and leathers.

The collars below are available in various lengths and two widths at present 1" and 1/2"

The diamante are a nickel rivet and have been inserted by first creating the hole with a punch and then hammered in place. The nickel spikes are screwed into the pre-punched holes.

All edges have been bevelled and burnished to create a quality finish.

Brass buckles are on order so I will be making that option available shortly! Watch this space :)

My week in Tetbury, learning how to handstitch leather

Well, it has been some time since I last posted. Sorry about that! As some of you may know I went off to Tetbury for a week to attend a summer school on hand stitching leather goods. The course was provided by Macgregor and Michael and the lovely Val is the kindest, understanding teacher you will ever meet. When I arrived on the Sunday evening I had, had quite a journey. I decided to get the national express coach from Lincoln as it seemed the easiest option! Well...9 hours later I arrived at my destination! I had a LONG wait at Birmingham! I had intended to blog about my week daily but I found the bed and breakfast I was in only had internet access on the landing and so I would have been in the way of other guests. So here it is!

Bright and early Monday morning (after a yummy breakfast) I made my way to Val's workshop. There I met 4 lovely people who were also looking to learn skills for leather production. One of them been Jules from Cloon Keen Atelier - An exquisite perfume company based in Galway. The smell from their candles is amazing!!!!

We talked to Val about what we aimed to get from the course. I was after expanding my handbag designs and pet accessories.

First, the basics! We had to learn how the leather was prepared and then on to do a basic saddle stitch:

These are the basic hand tools needed for working with leather.

The leather is first marked to show where the stitches will be.

It is then the stitching can begin! As you can see my first attempt was not very straight!

After stitching we bevelled and burnished the edges (bevelling is where the edge is white) this helps to show I nice finish on products)

Burnished edges are created by using a special gum which is then rubbed onto the sides of the leather by a linen cloth.

Once my trial piece was finished it was time to begin my bag! I designed a style I wanted for myself, a timeless classic. So I chose a lovely red leather and a saddle shape. First, the pattern was made:

Then, it was time to cut out the leather with these tools-

eeek! This was so scary! Especially cutting around the curve I'd decided to use on the front!

I was so worried about cutting it out as it would be very expensive to waste! I'm not sure if you can see on the picture but the crease marks are from the cow, every piece of leather tells a story!

Next I made the gusset for my bag, this was by far the hardest part! It involved lots of cutting, gluing ,clamping,bevelling,burnishing and stitching!

Time to mark the guidelines for channelling-

The edges of the gusset had to be channelled on the backs to allow them to be folded when gluing.

Then clipped in place to allow the glue to set.

The glued edges were then stitched (A little straighter and neater than my first attempt!)

Next...

I then prepared my strap. This also had to be bevelled and burnished, plus a keeper to keep the strap secure.

Next I marked out where my clasp was to be positioned and cut the trickiest hole EVER!

The two lines are where I next needed to cut, it had to be the correct size for my turn lock. involving lots of attempts with tracing paper to get it right!

After that, I attached the rivet on the strap to the gusset. This was a fun part, getting rid of any pent up anger!! WHACK!

It was now time to attach the dreaded gusset itself!!! This was very tricky and involved at least two pairs of hands! I have no idea what I would have done without trusty bulldog clips! I had to ensure all corners were evenly lined so the bag didn't end up out of shape!

Bit by bit it was time to stitch......

This took a while....

Phew!!!! Now, there were a few uneven edges, this was easily sorted out by shaving them all together to make sure I had a straight edge

And of course you cant't leave the edge like that!!!

Beautifully bevelled and burnished!!!

Nearly there just have to glue my inner pocket to the main part of the bag, This was cut out with pigskin, commonly used for linings and pockets. I glued this to the back of the bag and trapped it between the other side of the gusset and commenced more gluing and bulldog clipping!

To burnish this edge I needed to use a red dye as the pocket is a light colour it showed through on the outside.

Finally, the last bit was to attach the buckle and its keeper,

The strap then needed to be marked,a hole cut for the buckle and skimmed (this was also done on the gusset) to enable me to stitch through the double layer.

Then glued down in place ready for stitching.

The keeper is held in place by two double stitches,

The last bit was to punch holes in the strap,polish the main bag and voila!! As they say!!!

One special bag!!!

If you like what you see I will be shortly creating my own in my workshop at home. Also in my next blog I will update with pet accessories I have made. Using the traditional hand tool method in leather production is very satisfying and the double saddle stitch technique lasts far longer than any machine stitch would ever do.

This past week I had the Elsham Hall fair, which unfortunately didn't go too well! There weren't a lot of people looking at the fair to be honest and there were a lot of unhappy traders! I have a Ladie's race day this Saturday at Nottingham race course which I'm hoping will be an improvement! There are crowds in their thousands that gather at these events and knowing us Women, they are usually on the prowel to spend some cash! So fingers crossed :)

Last week and this week I have been preparing for the Easter Fair at Elsham Hall, in Brigg. If you are local do come along, there will be a great atmosphere and lots to do!

Wow I am actually early with my handmade Monday!!! Shocking!

This week I have started to create some children's hair accessories, All new to me, but I thought I'd have a go as I have a fair Easter weekend so would like some smaller items to have on my stall.

These were made with various ribbon and a stretchy elastic which girls normally use to tie their hair. I have called these the genius title ahem.... 'Ribbon Hair Ties'

I will also be creating bows on clips, and other various small lovelies.

These new hair ties can be made to order in a variety of colours, in particular for themes if you or your little one are part of a team i.e Cheerleading/Dance related sports then these would go down a treat.

Last week was quite a busy one with sewing! I have my fair this Saturday so I'm trying to get some stock made to sell there. First on the list was to create my strawberry shortcake range:

Yummy!!! If you like any of these they are available to buy through my website under the purses section. They are created from 100% cotton with a poly cotton lining (65% polyester/35% cotton) and each one contains a small open pocket for your cards.

I have also been busy working on a commission for Kat of With U In Mind.
Kat liked my allsorts purse fabric (see here) and wanted a slouch shoulderbag in the same fabric. So here is the final outcome :)

Midas Touch - Gold Prom Bag Collection

I have recently been updating my Prom makes, the latest collection is called 'Midas Touch' and yes, you guessed it, it is all about the Gold.

Each bag has been designed from the initial sketch through to the pattern and creation by myself. I wanted to add a touch of extra class to these collections as I know how important Prom night can be. These

designs are made using a satin backed Silk dupion, and fully lined in Chinese satin. Each bag contains a fully functional inside zip pocket to keep your Prom purse,plastic and keys safe.

They measure approx 32cm x 16cm and fasten with a magnetic brass clasp.

This pendant is hand painted on white glass tile. The pendant is painted in a few layers before final finish and fired in a kiln to make the color permanent. Finally, UV resistant coating was sprayed for added protection of the color. It can be washed in water with common detergents. A plated bail is added to the pendant.

Unique Christmas decorations - The home of the Tomte!

A Tomte (or Nisse) is a mythical creature of Scandinavian folklore. Tomtar were believed to take care of a farmer's home and children and protect them from misfortune, in particular at night, when the housefolk were asleep. In the late 1800s they became the bearers of Christmas (Jul) presents and the little creature you see now is known as a Jultomte in Sweden. The Jultomte, although much like Father Christmas, doesn't live on the North Pole, but in the forest; he doesn’t come down the chimney at night, but through the front door, delivering the presents directly to the children who have put out a bowl of porridge for him on Christmas Eve.

Well, it's been another crazy month for ZukieStyle!

I have been working on two new collections, one to fit in with the summer's top event - the Football World Cup and the second a collection for Queeni B Boutique.

My collection for the World Cup has been inspired by the strips of all 32 teams taking part. The bags are either minor hints of the team or full in your face emblem showing! You choose...

Wow what a week! Last weekend I attended the Galaxy UK Beauty pageant in Cheshire. It was great to see the girls and meet the organisers who I have been in touch with the past year while developing my sponsorship collection. The site is currently having images from the nights added but here are the winners who received a bag each from ZukieStyle, while the top 4 in each category also became new owners of a Zukie purse.

Collection for Galaxy Pageants UK - Finally finished!!!

Phew!!! The collection is done and the bags are eagerly awaiting their new home in the winners and finalists hands!

Late 2009, I was asked by Galaxy Pageants to be an official prize sponsor for their contest in March.
I gladly accepted. This was a nice experience to create pretty, sparkly and girly products as most of my creations up until now have been quite vintage inspired.

The aim was to use the Union Jack as a design feature. Last year, the winner Hayley Mac took a bag with the design to the internationals in America where it proved quite popular. My mission - to create a similar idea for my collection, but handmade and individual of course.

So....here are the completed designs! There is a clutch for each winner (Miss & Miss Teen Galaxy) and the 5 runners up in each category will receive a purse.

Back to ZukieStyle....Only four more purses left to make for the Galaxy Pageant collections. I will be posting pics at the weekend.

I have been going mad on buttons, lace and diamantes for them! I find adding diamante quite theraputic compared to sewing the actual bags, maybe I should start concentrating more on sparkly things!!
Each bag and purse has the Union Jack theme running through them but as a classy design rather than straight 'in your face' blue, red and white. I hope the winners will like them and show them off with pride :0)

It's been a year!

Well would you believe it has been a year since I last blogged!
It has been so hectic during that time I am not suprised I haven't visited my page in a while. I have been very busy moving, sewing and displaying!
Me and my other half Curt have moved to my home town, Lincoln. The move came just before Christmas which was not the best timing! We have been fortunate enough to get somewhere to stay and not have to worry too much about a high rent. We also landed ourselves our jobs just at the right time so decided to go for it.
At the same time, I exhibited ZukieStyle at The Clothesshow at the NEC in Birmingham. What an experience! It was an intense week. I managed to sell half my stock and advertise my product to the best of my abilities. Although, next time I think I would prefer to be in a different zone.
I am now busy working on my two collections for the beauty pageants I am sponsoring. The first is in March and will be taking place at Runcorn, 'Miss Galaxy UK.'

Yummy yummy chocolate swirly cookies!

Hello everyone! I hope you have had a nice weekend. I was working last night but have had the day off today and been busy! I made chocolate and vanilla swirls!!!Yummy! I know they won't last long when the other half comes in so have taken a pic to remember them by! I am actually hoping to sell them and other small cakes off my site, just got to check the important things about hygiene regulations etc.

I have also been quite busy rest of the week. I was back at work so i don't know how i found the time but, i made 3 charms! One is a mouse from fabric and the other two are a panda and a slug!(yes a slug!) I made these out of clay, something i havn't used for years but really have enjoyed it whilst in front of the telly. I just need to paint them so will post pics next week.

Also, a lady off the craftforum would like to supply my bags in her boutique!!!!Yey!!I'm very excited. It will be nice to get them out there. If you live in the cotswolds look out ZukieStyle's about!

Hmmf am poorly today so no work...am annoyed to be honest! It was a big night tonight. It's the press night for Pillowman, comedy events and sports awards! All in one night! I went in but got told to come home :( So i'm keeping myself busy with work i can do at home and of course blogging!

My next project will be to create some bag charms! I have ordered my keyrings so as soon as they come I will start getting busy! I need to add smaller items to my website. So i think this will tie in well with my items! And also more affordable!

In the coming months i am also hoping to set up a few fairs around the Lincolnshire area. I have also been quite busy baking again recently. Was just thinking how nice it would be to have a crafty coffee shop up the steep hill....I can only dream....if anyone is desparately wanting to sell their shop-please let me know!Hee hee! Watch this space...!x

Hmmmm, I want to design something new but i'm no sure what! I am thinking along the lines of some more accessories. Possibly for younger children. Maybe pencil cases? But i also like the idea of some thick fashionable belts-any ideas?!Help! I have hit a wall :( xxx

Tomorrow I go back to work after two weeks off. It was only meant to be one but unfortunetly I had bad news the first week and so it ended up merging into the 2nd.

Still, i have had a nice relaxing 2nd half! On thursday I went to see my friend in London, and we ended up going to see Phantom Of The Opera last minute! We were having a few drinks in Leicester Square and then thought 'lets go see how much the cheaper tickets are' we got a great deal! It was brilliant! It is somethingI have always wanted to see, especially as i'm such a musical fan!

This weekend I have been umming and aaahing over what to do next with my hobbies! I have been really bad and not touched my sewing machine since November. I have started to write a short story instead! I havn't really written anything since I was young but I just had an urge, so we will see how it goes!
I have also had a great idea of renting some space in Lincoln. I would like to set up some craft fairs in the coming months and i'd like to do them in some of Lincoln's nice country parks. I have got in touch with the council to see how to go about it so fingers crossed! If there is anyone out there who would be interested in having a stall, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Well, that's it for now, best get to bed for the early start :(

One more day until the Rutland fair, in the morning i will be busy taking photos of my latest creations, buying ink cartridges, finishing off purses and giving my stall a trial run!

I really hope the weather is kind and that i sell at least one thing and i will be happy! Never been to a 2day event before so it's a first.

My purses have turned out well, i think people will be more inclined to buy smaller items. Photos of the fair and my new creations will appear on here after the weekend! So keep your eye on the blog!

Well, it has been so long since i started my blog, and oh dear, i havent done so well at keeping it up have I?!
So much has happened in the past few months, I have finished my job as a bar manager. I feel so much better, more time to sleep! I now have a job at the new curve theatre in leicester, I start at the end of august, the building opens in september. It will be so different but I think I will enjoy it, i've have always wanted to work in theatre.
I am also trying to get the experience together to teach, something i wanted to start this year but i think will happen next year now. I have been accepted to be a volunteer for the brownies, that will be different! But I cant wait to share my skills with the girls.
So with my 3weeks of not working, i am getting my stock together for two fairs which i am attending to show my designs to the public. Fingers crossed people will like them!
I will shortly add some pics of some accessories I have made, I thought head scalves and material chokers would sell well, what do you think.....?x

Hi there, i'm dee a regular on the craft forum, i have just created my blog. Not really sure what i'm meant to say but i guess its just like a diary for my craft- right?
Well i design and make my own handbags and accessories under the name 'zukiestyle'. My business is new, and i would like to do this as a fulltime job, I am currently stuck in a rut as a manager working in a bar- not what i hoped for at university!!!But it does pay the bills....
